The primary consequence of an election is not that the voter’s personal virtue will be demonstrated, nor that the candidates will be praised or chastised for their various graces and faults, nor that some message concerning your policy preferences will be conveyed to the powers that be. All of these things can happen, but there are other, frequently more effective ways to achieve every one.

The primary consequence of an election is that one of the candidates will take office, and will have the powers and duties vested in that office until the next election.
